Fran Meyer
In recent years, Fran Anthony Meyer, Ph.D serves as an educational consultant for organizations that focus on policy and program development in dance, arts, health, and physical education for students, pre-k through grade 12, including students with special needs. Her professional work in dance education has spanned 40 years as a teacher, performer, administrator, program designer, assessment writer, artistic director, conference planner, festival director, standards and curriculum writer, journal and other publications editor/author, staff development specialist, research project director, grants administrator, leadership mentor, and board/leadership team member at the state, southerndistrict, national, and international levels. She received her BS degree from Longwood College (currently, Longwood University) and her MS and PhD degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Early in her career, Meyer worked for the Fredericksburg City Public Schools in Virginia.While there, she taught health, physical, and dance/arts education to students in grades pre-K to 8. She also taught dance and adaptive physical education to students from ages two to 20 years old. Simultaneously, she worked part-time with the Fredericksburg Parksand Recreation Department to establish boys and girls dance programs (ages 12 to 15) and performance companies (FREDANCO). Meyer further consulted with the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to chair initial and follow-up writing committees for the state’s Standards of Learning for dance, health, and physical education. She wrote thestate’s model dance assessment items for K through grade12, worked on teams to developmodel lesson plans for students in dance programs for the gifted at the middle and high school levels, served as an adjudicator for the Governor’s Schools for Arts Education and the Virginia Fine Arts Scholarship Awards. For 10 years, Meyer served as the lead dance education consultant on planning committees for the VDOE’s Fine Arts Leadership Conferences. She also served on the Virginia Dance Inservice Team for over five years and on the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness & Sports for four years.
Over the years, Meyer has been active with a variety of not-for-profit and professional organizations at the local, state, national, and international levels. For seven years, she served as an Adjudicator for the Virginia Academic Decathlon. During eight years, she served on the Advisory Committee and the Board of Directors for the Virginia Alliance for Arts Education. She founded the Virginia Children’s Dance Festival and served as the chair or co-chair for 15 years. Meyer was president of Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education and Dance (VAHPERD), vice-president of the dance division for the Southern District of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (SDAAHPERD), and in 2005-06 the SDAAHPERD president.
In early work on the national scene, Meyer worked on a joint committee of the National Dance Association (NDA) and the American Association for Health Education (AAHE) to create the Dance for Health! program and served as its first program coordinator. She served as NDA’s State and District Relations Unit Director prior to becoming its president (2001-2003). Meyer presented papers on dance for young children, dance choreography, adolescent health-risk factors,and infusing dance education and health education at the World Congresses of the International Council for Health, Physical Education, Recreation • Sport & Dance (ICHPER•SD). She also served for three years as a reviewer for dance articles in the ICHPER•SD Journal, edited dance and health articles in the VAHPERD Journal, and edited textbook manuscripts, articles, pamphlets, and booklets for NDA publications. Meyer served as the team leader for writing and editing NDA’s guidance book Implementing the National Dance Education Standards (2010).
